Q: How do I trade in my car that is upside down on payments.?
I have a 2003 I35 infiniti and i still owe $15,000.00 on it and it's value is $10,000.00. If i trade it in forr a car that's vallued at about $10,000 do I still have to pay a note? If yes how much? I'm just not really good with these things.

A: Don't do it. Here is why... If you trade your existing car, you will owe the difference between the trade in value and outstanding balance. Is the $10K value the retail value or trade value? If the $10K is the trade-in value, you will owe $5000. If $10K is the retail value, you will owe the $5000 + the difference between trade and retail. If you have even reasonable credit, most dealers can find financing that will allow you to roll this negative equity into a car purchase but all you do is create more negative equity through the second car purchase. You also pay a higher interest rate than a standard car sale. This is a financial death spiral for you. If you make a trade and roll the negative and don't have gap insurance and the car is totaled (even if it is not your fault) you will end up without a car and still owe $5000 from the first car and perhaps a second $5000 from the second car. Not a good situation. If you want to be financially savy and build good credit you need to avoid negative equity situations. For a new car, this would require 20% down and financing for not more than 4 years. Yes, that is a lot of down payment and high monthly payments but represents the maximum you should spend on a new car.

Q: Switching from Conventional to Mobil 1 - Please help?
Hello My service advisor recommended for me to make the switch from conventional to Mobil 1, i have a 2003 Infiniti I35 with 55K miles on it. I do a lot of city driving, hard driving, live in DC so its 2nd/3rd to NY as far as traffic goes Please tell me if this is a good idea the pros why i should do it or a waste of money, cons why i shouldnt. Also how long can i go time wise without having to change the oil again, he told me 10K miles and 1 yr that seems a bit much, please advise on what is recommended and also what you think if i plan to do every 6K miles or 6months. mobil 1 the way to go or is castrol, amsoil, royal purple better choices

A: The dealer should have had you running synthetic from the start. Yes, do it-now. And use the best quality filter to boot. Let me ask you...you spend what $35k on this car, right? If you change your oil four times a year, and it cost you $120.00 more per year, doesn't that make sense? Now, synthetics do a lot for you. They flow better for the same viscosity so they get into the places that conventional oil doesn't. Improved mileage too, because internal engine friction is less. They last longer because they are engineered to withstand heat better. You can run a thinner viscosity (read better mileage, cold start-up protection). The can have additives that actually bond with the metal in the engine (Castrol Syntec). Finally, they suspend dirt better, filter better and stay cleaner longer. I recommend 6k changes, but you can go to 10k as long as it looks clean. Downside is that if your engine leaks or uses oil, it will do more if you use synthetic.

Q: Why are tire wheels locks made of brittle ceramic and not steel like lugnuts?
A wheel lock on my 2003 Infiniti I35 broke when I tried to loosen it, making for a very expensive flat tire repair. Did I screw up? Well, at the tire store, when trying to remove another tire, the wheel lock broke when a TIRE PROFESSIONAL tried to remove it. What's going on here? I Googled "broken wheel lock" and, judging from the number of hits, this is not an uncommon problem. Some people blamed the previous tire repair guys for over-tightening with impact guns. Maybe the auto manufacturer warns against those devices. But come on! Impact guns have been around a lot longer than wheel locks (this is the first car I've had with them). What I want to know is, given the torques that can be encountered, why do the manufacturers make wheel locks out of brittle ceramic instead of molding the lock nut out of the same durable steel that lugnuts are made from? DUH!

A: I work in a shop, I encounter 5-10 carsy per day with wheel locks. In the thounsands of wheel lock nuts and keys I have dealt with I have never seen any made from ceramic, only steel. Also except for a very few worn out keys I have never seen one simply break. Lost keys are the biggest problem I encounter.

Q: 2 bit question?
Which car is better and which car is cooler 1) Infiniti G35 sedan 2) Infiniti I35 3) 1998 Mercedes-Benz C230 4) 2003 BMW 325i 5) Cadillac Catera

A: Two questions - one answer. The Infiniti I35. The sedan has "family car" written all over it. The Mercedes and BMW cost a fortune to maintain. The Catera is just plain junk. Kinda like Ford's Pinto!

Q: Acura TL??
I am looking to purchase a used car. I was sold on a 2003 TL, but now after doing extensive research, have learned about the transmission issue. I would LOVE to buy an 04, but it's just not in the budget. I know Acura covers them up to 100k miles, but do they actually fix the issue or put a bandage on it? Also, was this just a small % of the cars of the production line? I have to go back to the drawing board if this is a big issue. I love cars and really want to get something used, but nice. My budget is 16-18k. Was thinking (if not the TL) 04-05 Volvo S60, Infiniti I35 (if i can find one), was thinking Audi A4, but don't think I could sleep with the reliability issues I hear about. Any others??? I also was thinking about an 03 Lexus ES 300, but getting such an old vehicle bothers me, should it? All thoughts, experience, advice would be great. I have to turn in my company car next week as I'm switching jobs. Thanks a lot in advance.

A: YOU CAN ALSO GET FREE INFORMATION BY CALLING THE MANUFACTURER AND ASKING THEM. ALL YOU WILL NEED TO TELL THEM IS THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE VEHICLE GIVE THEN THE VIN AND THEY WILL PULL EVERYTHING THAT THEY HAVE ON FILE THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED. ALSO REMEMBER THAT IF THE VEHICLE IS ANYWHERE NEAR A COASTLINE HAVE IT INSPECTED FOR FLOODING, I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY OF THESE VEHICLE GET PASS INSPECTION BECAUSE THEY WERE CLEANED UP VERY GOOD AND THE CUSTOMER GOT THE RAW END OF THE DEAL.

Q: 2003 Infiniti i35...problems?
Hello. I have a 2003 Infiniti i35. 26,000 miles. When i bought the car in July of 2006 a Full tank of Gas used to give me about 300 miles. However, today, for example, the needle was almost on empty but i only got 228 miles for a FULL tank of gas which ends up being about 16 mpg in the city (i used to get around 24 in the city the first month or so). What is wrong? The car is in MINT condition and i cant find anything wrong with it. There is no warranty on the car so everything i do has to come from my pocket. I've read reviews on people with the same car and the same year who are getting around 24-26 MPG. Please help. I need serious answers.

Q: 2004 infiniti I35 question?
My friend has a 2003/2004 model infiniti, she was getting both of her belts change when the mechanic could'nt get the belt off. I know on some cars, you need a special tool to take certain parts off, or it may have a certain type of bolt/nut/screw. Does anybody know if you need a certain type of tool to take the belts off a I35?

A: There is NO special tool needed to remove those two belts. An auto tech will be able to remove old belts and install new belts in less than 1 hr using regular metric wrenches and sockets. To remove alternator, A/C belt: loosen idler pulley nut then loosen belt tensioner. To remove P/S belt: loosen P/S bolt at the back of pump and bolt tensioner bolt at front of pump then loosen adjusting nut. Install in reverse. Check belt tension. Is there anything we didn't know like: someone worked on it before and damaged nuts and bolts so the new mechanic was not able to remove it. If it is the problem, the mechanic is right when saying he needs special tool.
